New climbing pictures

In the last posts I promised to update my gallery section with the newest climbing pictures as soon as I got everything together. And here we go: Yesterday I got the pictures of Jörg Schwarze (verticalimage.de) with the friendly permission to share them on my page. We didn’t spend a lot of time to create THE perfect pictures but he took some perfect snapshots! Impressive pictures with a very good composition. But now I stop talking and let the images speak. I appended a few to this post. The others can be found in the gallery section! Enjoy and check out Jörgs page for more pictures.

Winter activities

Hey guys it has been quite a while since my last post, I really apologize to those who read this blog. It has been a really intense and busy time during the winter. I will give you a brief overview what happened since the last post:

It started with a insane week with two concerts and the Nitro Circus show. I’ve been to the german bands “Tote Hosen” and Seed, first making some really good rock and the second deluxe reggae. It was a big big party at the stadion. The week after was the Nitro Circus, thanks again to Red Bull who sponsored the tickets and to Wet n Wire! Such a sick show Travis Pastrana and his guys pushed themselves to the max on the BMX and Motocross bikes – nice to see other crazy people in action. Gave me some inspiration!

The next episode in my winter was a 26km run around the lake of Ratzeburg. Finished as the 156./ 1700 with round about two hours. Pretty stoked about this result as I am not the best runner. Anyways it was such a nice event with so many sportive people pushing themselves. The event had some perfect vibes and was a pleasure to participate. The next days after the wind and the temperatures where a last time quite ok and I went for two days kiting in Pelzerhaken. Enjoyed to be on the board again and worked a lot on my tricks to blind, the SBend pass and my Blind Judge.

The time after this was characterized by the university. Having a lot of projects and homework keeping me really busy. I tried to stay fit with boxing and training in the climbing gym, for my next trip after christmas. And this was really one of the highlights this winter. I took the plane with Lorenz to the JoSoTo camp in Turkey, near Antalya. This climbing camp is a little bit remote in the mountains and has a lot of rock in 5 to 20 minutes walking distance. It was really one of the best places i’ve been for climbing. During the day around 20 to 25 degree and nice weather and during the night minus grades. Too bad we slept in a tent hehe. Anyways I was able to push my limits in rock climbing a lot. Onsighted a 8-/8 and was checking out 9- routes. Gonna crack this grade this year for sure. I will append some pictures of the rock to this post so you can check them out. In the gallery section you will find some more. Just a little recommendation: You should definitely check this place out when you are in climbing. It’s really worth the travel and just the camp itself is a nice pace with awesome people!

Ok so far so good – this was my winter for now. At the moment I am dominated by university as the exams come closer and many projects need to be done. But I’ve got a climbing contest on Saturday and I am planning my one year trip after I finished studies in August. So you will be able to read another post regarding this stuff pretty soon so stay tuned!

Climbing in El Chorro

Just arrived in Hamburg from El Chorro in Spain and back to studies again. Starting the last year of university – hamdullah! This semester wont be too harsh luckily and I’ve got a lil free time. My climbing trip also was a big success, Tobis climbing lodge is a really nice place and the surrounding is just awesome for climbers. Thousands of routes in half an hour driving distance. The first part of the trip I was giving a course with the HI-KGB and tought teachers how to handle their students on class trips to the rocks. After the course I had a couple of chances to push my own limit and to climb like hell hehe. Pushed it to a 8- onsight and a 8 red point which is quite a good progress. We also did other fun stuff like waterlining, deep water solo and cliff diving. Also the Spanish attitude is really cool and we spend some nice nights at bars around El Chorro enjoying a beer or two, while listening to live music.

So the next days are more or less reserverd to get the new semester started, but then the fun stuff kicks in again. Surf weekend with my dudes, Nitro Circus, Seed Concert, Tote Hosen concert and a wellness weekend with my family. Pretty stoked of all these nice stuff ahead. Also check out my gallery section for the newest pics from the trip.

Fall storms and climbing

It has been quite a time since my last post as I was really busy getting all my university exams done which was a big time sink. And right after the last exam was over we had some big fall storms kicking in. One of the best time of the year where it was possible to kite at least 4 days a week and in between some sick Bigdays. These days on the water helped me a lot to do some nice progression landing more and more tricks in variations, like to blind and wrapped and I finally managed to land some more Blind Judges, Sbend passes and other stuff thats really on top of my level.

For the next 10 days I will be off to El Chorro in Spain for a freecliming trip – assisting in a outdoor course to each some guys how to teach rock climbing and of course climbing for my own on this nice rock! So you probably wont read anything for the next two weeks here, but stay tuned as I will do a big post with pics and maybe a small vid about the whole trip when I am back. Stay safe and rip hard!

Rock climbing and waterlining

Finally found some time for a little entry here, had some very busy days behind me. Basicly I have a lot to do learning for my exams at the university. Got a lot of courses that want a lot of attention this semester haha. Anyways found some time to get on the rock of the Ith last week. We had four days on the camping ground in Lüerdissen. During the day climbing in the shade, as the sun was really burning like hell and afterwards getting to the nearby lake, spanning a waterline and having some dinner. To put it in a nutshell a intense weekend, which pushed my climbing a lot as I managed to do some of the classics over there.

After I got back I spend some days in Lübeck, learning and doing some fun stuff like spanning some 25m waterlines at a public lake. Still now pretty stoked about the feeling when you finish the never ending walk above the water. Got some people dropping in and watching the spectacle. We also spanned a 10m line for beginners to get the people into the addictive world of slack lining.

And in the next days we got some fun events for you. I will be in Pelzerhaken for the next two days working behind the bar for the Surfers Afterglow party – Ready to serve you some delicious Cuba Libre hehe and on Sunday there will be a SUP charity contest called Stand Up 4 Kids. I hope to see you all there guys, now have to get back to learning.

Climbing trip to Norway

Just arrived home from Norway and still so stoked about the landscape and nature. If you stand in these big valleys you can still feel the power of the ice masses that were forging the scenery. It polished granite faces up to one kilometer hight into the hills, that were just waiting to get climbed by us.

And this is what out trip was about – having just a rope and some safety tools as our equipment and getting from bottom to top. We had unbelievable nice climbs, ranging from 40 to 700 meters. The style to climb this blank granite faces is to rely on pure friction to carefully pace up the wall. This was totally new for me as I mostly use power over technique to solve climbing problems, In Norway it was all about superior footwork and body balance.

We were living in a nice small lodge on a camping ground at a fast going river in northern Setesdal. A nice base to reach some of the best climbs in the valley. The weather was mostly stable and we had the chance to get 5 of 6 days on the walls – the weather is not always like this.

So back to Germany there is a bunch of things to do. Next weekend I will do a fun Bouldercup at the Nordwandhalle called “Elbmoves” and we will have a slack line event at the same place. All this is combined with the new Reel Rock Tour, which will show us the newest climbing movies. Sounds like a lot of fun! Hope to see you over there. I will also announce some big and nice news the next days so make sure to look in here every now and then. And in the end I am praying for wind, we really need some more this year!

DAV Trainer C at Frankenjura

Imagine: Wake up, eat some simple but delicious breakfast, pack your climbing stuff, get into your trekking boots and finally start the day with hiking to the climbing crags. And this for one amazing week. This is what I was doing for the last week in Bavaria, Frankenjura, every day. I had my DAV Trainer C course in one of the best areas for climbing in Europe. Never saw so many rocks in such a little distance.

Except climbing we also had a lot of theory and training exercises to enhance our trainer abilities. From the climbing side I managed to push my onsight level nearly to 8- and I learned a lot for my technique. Of course I also got to know loads of new methods and tricks on how to be a better trainer to push your climbing even more if you are in one of my courses. The best thing is that I nearly got all Trainer B qualifications done and it will be the aim for next year to finish this course.

Wintertraining

The season 2012 is ahead and as I got some big plans, like competing in the Kitesurf Trophy and the North German Climbing comps, for this year I have a lot of training ahead. I am pretty happy to have 3 weeks time for Kitesurfing in Egypt this March, but the real strength and power builds up in the winter months. As I am in exam phase I got a lot of time at the moment and I have the opportunity to make up my own schedule. My training schedule is pretty crowded at the mome, having around 10 units a week. The first pillar of my training is the endurance, which I build up in extensive jogging exercises – I try to run around 40km a week with around 10-12km/. As a little motivation I registered for a half marathon (21,5km) in April. My coldest session was in around -15°, where I had icicles in my face – see the picture below.

The second pillar is strength and power. This all happens in the gym. Specific training is my climbing training around 2-3 times a week trying to push it to UIAA 8/7a. Apart from that I goto my Box gym 2-3 times a week doing some intense workouts and lifting some weights – this gives me the ultimate power I need for the summer.

Something for the next days: I will present the Naish SUP Boards in cooperation with “Frosch Sportreisen” on the travel exhibition in Hamburg this weekend. So if you are interested in SUP or just wanna get some infos about traveling drop by.
